Badminton Nova Soctia has many volunteer coaches who develop and inspire our athletes to better athletes and people. Our coaches range from community to high performance levels. All coaches in Nova Scotia are encouraged to become NCCP certified however it is not required. More importantly, coaches can be anyone who has a love for sport and community.

NCCP Explained

Badminton Nova Scotia encourages coaches to enter into the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) offered by Badminton Canada. The NCCP is an educational program aimed at upgrading the ability of coaching in Canada. It caters to the needs of coaches at all levels of the sport – whether you are new to badminton or have 50 years of experience. Badminton Canada has designed a coach development pathway that Badminton Nova Scotia encourages coaches, umpires, athletes and parents to get involved with.

In Nova Scotia we recognize the importance of strong coaching in developing well rounded athletes and technically sounds badminton players. Our goal is to support all of our coaches across the province in their growth and development through the Badminton Canada Coaching Pathway.

Become a Coach

Coaching is broken up into streams. Each stream is catered to a specific coaching subset. When becoming a coach it is important to identify which coaching stream best suits your current skills and the type of athletes you’re developing.

Shuttle Time

Part One – Trained
Register and complete the Shuttle Time workshop. This workshop is an 8 hour in-class and on-court workshop. Upon completion of this workshop you will be a trained Shuttle Time School Program Coach. There is no pre-requisite to taking this workshop.
Part Two – Gain Experience
Now that you are a trained Shuttle Time Coach use the knowledge, skills, technique and tactics you have learned to help lead and coach badminton sessions for children and youth in the school system.
Part Three – Certified
After you have gotten some experience coaching children and youth in the school system go for your Shuttle Time certification. To become certified you must arrange to have your portfolio evaluated and a direct practice observation.

Community Sport – Initiation

The Community Sport – Initiation level is designed for coaches, parents, athletes who have basic badminton experience and plan to be working with introductory children and youth badminton. At this level you will learn the fundamentals of coaching and badminton designed for participants of all ages. In this one day clinic you will be introduced to how to coach the basics of the sport in a fun, safe and self esteem building environment regardless of athlete ability.

Part One – Trained Register and complete the Community Sport Workshop. This is an 8 hour in-class and on-court workshop. Upon completion of this workshop you will be a trained Community Sport Coach. There is no pre-requisite to taking this workshop.

Part Two – Gain Experience Now that you are a trained Community Sport Coach use the knowledge, skills, technique and tactics you have learned to help lead and coach badminton sessions for children and youth at the introductory level.

Competition Introduction – Regional Coach

Designed for coaches who are introducing athletes aged 8-16 years to competitive badminton, this level will focus on fundamental skills and the technical/tactical strategies of the sport.

Competition Introduction – Provincial Coach

Designed for coaches who are introducing athletes aged 8-16 years to competitive badminton, this level will focus on fundamental skills and the technical/tactical strategies of the sport.

Competition Development

Competition Development is best suited for coaches who will be working with athletes playing at a highly competitive level. This level is intended for coaches working with athletes attending high level Provincial, Regional, National or International competitions.

Coaching Levels Transfer

The NCCP Levels system has been replaced by coach training opportunities that are grouped into three main streams: Competition, Instruction, and Community Sport. Farthermore, you must be fully certified in the NCCP level to qualify for a transfer.

Below is how the NCCP Levels transfer to NCCP streams.
Old Level 1 -> Community Sport Initiation
Old Level 2 -> Competition Introduction – Provincial
Old Level 3 -> Competition Development

Coaching on Court

Badminton Canada requires that all coaches within the field of play be NCCP certified. The level of NCCP certification required is dependant on the level of competition  occurring at the event. See the graphic below.
