Team Nova Scotia

The Badminton Nova Scotia Provincial Team Program’s overall goal is to support Nova Scotia’s best badminton athletes with their aspirations to compete and perform on the National stage and assist athletes and coaches in Nova Scotia to consistently earn selections to the Badminton Canada Junior and Senior National Team.

Our 3 year goals for the program include:

  1. Every player on Team Nova Scotia winning their first round match at Age Group National Championships;
  2. Have one player selected to represent Canada at Junior Pan Am Championships or an age group National Team Program each year; and
  3. Nova Scotia Finish 4th in the team event at the 2027 Canada Winter Games in Quebec.

About the Program

Badminton Nova Scotia’s Provincial Team Program runs annually from August to May and brings together the best badminton players from clubs across Nova Scotia to practice, train and compete together on a regular basis as part of Team Nova Scotia.

Players selected to the Team Nova Scotia are expected to continue to train regularly at their clubs. The program is designed to provide additional training opportunities to the players on the team by bringing the team team together on a regular basis.

Selection Criteria

All players interested in being members of Team Nova Scotia must meet the minimum following criteria:

  • an active Provincial membership with Badminton Nova Scotia.
  • must be a U15, U17, U19 or Senior player (U13 may be considered if proven national competitiveness).
  • must be consistently achieving semi-finals and/or finals in their respective age categories at BNS Scotia Series and Atlantic Series Tournaments.
  • must be showing potential to competitive in their age category at National tournaments, if not already showing competitiveness.
  • must be practicing a minimum of 3+ times per week on a regular basis at a club in Nova Scotia.

Team Nova Scotia is a selection based program with the goal of selecting the top 2 male and 2 female players in each age category (Under 15, Under 17, Under 19, Senior) in Nova Scotia. However, less or more players may be selected in a given year based on the competitiveness of players. Team Nova Scotia selection uses a number of result based metrics such as Badminton Canada National rankings Atlantic and Nova Scotia rankings, previous and current season results at Scotia Series, Atlantic Series and National Elite Series tournament in addition to an annual tryout to select the team.

Out of Province Players – Players who are out of province training but would like to compete and represent Team Nova Scotia at national events are able to be designated Team Nova Scotia. They must meet the minimum selection criteria as well as meet the required result/performance based criteria by rankings and results at tournaments. Out of province players will have a reduced fee, and receive a modified level of support.

Supports

Players on Team Nova Scotia will have access to the following supports:

  • Team Nova Scotia practices 3 hours, typically every second weekend starting in September and running until the end of May coached by the Provincial Team Coaching Staff.
  • Team Nova Scotia typically hosts a 1 or 2 day-long camps each year led by the Provincial Team Coaching Staff, typically one hosted in the fall and one hosted in the winter/spring.
  • Team Nova Scotia has a partnership the the Canadian Sport Institute Atlantic (CSIA) for regular strength and conditioning sessions led by a trained a certified strength and conditioning coach for players on the team meeting certain result standards. The CSIA is the center for sport excellence in Nova Scotia and where the majority of National Team athletes across all sports living in Nova Scotia train.
  • Through our partnership with CSIA, we have access to a limited number of mental performance and nutritionist hours for Team Nova Scotia to work with trained and certified professionals in these fields.
  • The Provincial Coach will attend selected national tournaments in addition to Junior National Championship to coach Team Nova Scotia at those tournaments.
  • If Team NS players earn selection to BCAN Pan Am Team or other National Teams they may have access to additional funding through BNS and Sport NS to help pay for the fees associated with attending those events.

Fees

This Program is subsidized by Badminton Nova Scotia and funding/grants from the Sport Nova Scotia and the Province of Nova Scotia, however, player fees are still required in order to operate the program. The fees are set each year at the beginning of the season and please refer to the most current Provincial Team Document below for accurate information on fees.

Provincial Program Structure

The Badminton Nova Scotia Provincial Program is comprised of two main programs or teams:

Team Nova Scotia

Team Nova Scotia is the team that selected annually across all age categories (U15, U17, U19, Senior) to represent Nova Scotia at the National Elite and National Championship tournaments each season.

Canada Games Team

The Canada Games Team is the team selected and operated through BNS Provincial Team Program in order to prepare and select the team of 5 males and 5 females that will represent Nova Scotia at the Canada Winter Games every four years. The next Canada Winter Games will be hosted in 2027 by Quebec City.
